Not all monologues are made equal. Many monologues found in published plays start with “When I was 12…” or “I remember when…” and they tell a story. Within the context of a play they work and you understand why this story needs to be told, but rarely do they make a good audition monologue. But what makes for a good audition monologue?
This means that it’s clear that the character actively needs something from the other person: empathy, acknowledgment, an answer, a gesture, for them to say something or do something in response. It means it’s clear that the character is working for a response and looking to affect the other person. It’s not passive, meaning that they are just a talking head for some exposition.
Some monologues read all-one-note, meaning the character is trying one tactic to get the reaction or response they want. The monologues in this database have more than one tactic, so you can show casting, directors, grad audition panels, etc, that you can pivot. Additionally, it’s clear what the character is working for.
Contemporary. Not modern. Most auditions require a contemporary monologue, usually categorized into comedic or dramatic. These days, they’re much more nuanced than that—serio-comic, dark comedy, tragic comedy, etc. But what’s important is that they’re contemporary. No monologue in this database is from earlier than 2004. I’m working on curating monologues from plays from the 80’s and 90’s!

This database, at present, is solely contemporary monologues, written in the last 20 years. There is a mix of dramatic, comedic, serio-comic/tragi-comedy, and a handful of absurd. The majority of them are for actors in their 20's and 30's but there are some for late teens and 40's as well.
When the database goes live, you can purchase forever-access to the 200 monologue descriptions.
